Creativity — 20% of your score

Creativity: the reason someone stops scrolling

Creativity is worth 20% because a technically perfect photo of nothing is still a photo of nothing. This category rewards the decision you made that nobody else would have made.

    What REVIEWR grades here

    • Originality of the idea or the angle on a familiar subject
    • Whether a risk was taken, and whether it paid off
    • Use of timing, layering, reflection, motion or juxtaposition
    • How far the frame is from the default version of that scene

    What strong work looks like

    • The photo could not have been taken by someone standing where everyone else stood
    • One clear idea drives every decision in the frame
    • An unusual choice is committed to fully rather than hedged

    What costs you points

    • The postcard angle of a well-photographed place
    • Effects added in editing to compensate for a weak idea
    • Copying a style without the intent behind it

    This week's drill

Pick a subject you have photographed before. Make one frame that would be rejected by a stock library — too close, too dark, too odd — but that you genuinely like. Submit it and read what the critique says about intent.
